class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tThe symptoms of schizophrenia adversely affect the organisation of thought, emotions, and behaviour, leading to a loss of communication skills and, consequently, a significant decline in functional capacity.<br>Schizophrenia typically emerges in late adolescence or early adulthood, with onset occurring somewhat later in women than in men.<br><br>&nbsp;<br><br>&nbsp;<br><br>&nbsp;<br><br>&nbsp;<br><br>Certain triggering events \u2014 such as military service, relocation, separation, loss of a loved one, or substance use \u2014 can precipitate the first episode of the disorder.<br>Its course usually includes:<br><ul>\r\n \t<li>a <strong>prodromal phase<\/strong>, marked by non-specific symptoms (such as sensitivity to noise, anxiety, fear, confusion),<\/li>\r\n \t<li>an <strong>active phase<\/strong>, characterised by predominant delusions and hallucinations, and<\/li>\r\n \t<li>a <strong>residual phase<\/strong>, in which social withdrawal, lack of motivation, apathy\/indifference, or attenuated symptoms of the active phase prevail.<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-8567d99 e-flex e-con-boxed e-con e-parent\" data-id=\"8567d99\" data-element_type=\"container\" data-settings=\"{&quot;background_background&quot;:&quot;classic&quot;}\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"e-con-inner\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-884839b elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"884839b\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tAccording to the American diagnostic classification system <strong>DSM-5<\/strong>, the core features and diagnostic criteria for schizophrenia include <strong>two or more of the following symptoms<\/strong>, each present for a significant portion of time during a one-month period (or less, if successfully treated).<br>At least one of these must be (1), (2), or (3):<br><br>&nbsp;<br><ol>\r\n \t<li><strong>Delusions<\/strong> \u2014 irrational beliefs that cannot be corrected by logical reasoning.\r\nDepending on their content, they may be:\r\n<ul>\r\n \t<li><strong>Persecutory<\/strong>: the person believes they are being targeted, persecuted, followed, or spied upon by others.<\/li>\r\n \t<li><strong>Grandiose<\/strong>: the person is convinced they have a special mission, such as saving the world, making a groundbreaking discovery, or delivering divine messages.<\/li>\r\n \t<li><strong>Jealous<\/strong>: dominated by thoughts and beliefs that their partner is unfaithful.<\/li>\r\n \t<li><strong>Ideas of reference<\/strong>: neutral stimuli are perceived as having personal meaning or intent \u2014 for example, believing that a song was played on the radio specifically for them.<\/li>\r\n \t<li><strong>Referential<\/strong>: believing that others are talking about them or gossiping about them.<\/li>\r\n \t<li><strong>Thought control or thought broadcasting<\/strong>: the person believes others can read their mind, control their actions, or implant thoughts.<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n<\/li>\r\n \t<li><strong>Hallucinations<\/strong>, most commonly auditory \u2014 such as hearing voices commenting, insulting, criticising, or giving commands \u2014 but also visual (seeing things that are not present) or tactile.<\/li>\r\n \t<li><strong>Disorganised speech<\/strong>, such as frequent derailments or incoherence.<\/li>\r\n \t<li><strong>Grossly disorganised or catatonic behaviour<\/strong>.<\/li>\r\n \t<li><strong>Negative symptoms<\/strong>, such as diminished emotional expression, lack of motivation (avolition), social withdrawal, reduced speech content, or impaired thought processes.<\/li>\r\n<\/ol><br>&nbsp;<br><br>For a significant portion of the time since the onset of the disturbance, one or more major areas of functioning \u2014 such as work, interpersonal relationships, or self-care \u2014 are markedly impaired.<br><br>The symptoms of the disorder must persist for <strong>at least six months<\/strong>, which must include <strong>at least one month of active-phase symptoms<\/strong>.<br>This six-month period may also include phases of <strong>prodromal<\/strong> or <strong>residual symptoms<\/strong>, during which the signs of the disorder may be limited to negative symptoms or to two or more attenuated forms of the characteristic symptoms \u2014 such as odd beliefs, unusual perceptual experiences, disorganised speech, or behaviour.\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-61b117a6 Pharmacological therapy:<\/h4>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-6a983ec elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"6a983ec\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>Antipsychotic medications targeting primarily the <strong>positive symptoms<\/strong> (such as delusions, hallucinations, and disorganised behaviour);<br \/><strong>benzodiazepines<\/strong> for the management of agitation, insomnia, and anxiety;<br \/><strong>antidepressants<\/strong> (often beneficial when the criteria for a co-occurring depressive disorder are met);<br \/>as well as <strong>behavioural therapeutic techniques<\/strong> (e.g., positive\/negative reinforcement, social skills training), among others.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-5424bff e-flex e-con-boxed e-con e-parent\" data-id=\"5424bff\" data-element_type=\"container\"
