AGIA IRINI is a private psychiatric clinic dedicated to providing high-quality healthcare services, guided by a strong sense of responsibility and commitment to care.

 

It was founded by the company “Psychiatric Clinic of Drama S.A.” and began operating in January 2000 with a capacity of 100 beds, set within a verdant 15-acre estate. The clinic was established to meet the pressing need for psychiatric services in the region of Eastern Macedonia and Thrace.

Dementia

The term dementia refers to a pathological condition characterised primarily by progressive memory loss, disturbances of orientation, concentration, and attention, as well as changes in personality, mood, and behaviour.

Anxiety Disorders

According to the American diagnostic system DSM, the following anxiety disorders are identified: Panic disorder, Agoraphobia, Generalised anxiety disorder, Social phobia, and Specific phobia.

Schizophrenia

The symptoms of the disorder adversely affect thought organisation, emotional expression, and behaviour, leading to a loss of communication skills and, consequently, a significant decline in overall functioning.

Depressive Disorder

Depression has been described since antiquity, as evidenced in many ancient texts (for example, the accounts of King Saul in the Old Testament, the suicide of Ajax in Homer’s Iliad around 400 BC, and Hippocrates’ use of the term “melancholia”).

Bipolar Disorder (Manic Depression)

This is a chronic and severe psychiatric disorder, characterised by multiple recurrent episodes of both mania and depression. In approximately 10% of patients, episodes are exclusively manic; however, the disorder is still classified as bipolar.

Substance- and Alcohol-Related Disorders

A variety of substances may cause use disorders and dependence, including alcohol, heroin, cocaine, benzodiazepines, amphetamines, and others.

Creative Occupation Department

The Creative Occupation Department focuses on enhancing functionality, promoting the improvement of both gross and fine motor skills, and preventing the decline of cognitive and social abilities.

The aim of the aforementioned Creative Occupation groups is to promote the independence of patients in terms of their functionality, as well as their smooth reintegration into society.

 

 

The interdisciplinary team evaluates each patient in order to develop an individualised treatment plan tailored to their needs, strengths, and weaknesses. Patients receive acceptance and support from their therapists, with the aim of fostering self-trust, improving social skills, and building social relationships with other group participants.

Expressive Therapy

Therapy through free expression is a very important component for individuals with special abilities. Expressive Therapy also includes theatre play, involving simple and enjoyable exercises that create the feeling of play (e.g. movement, relaxation, breathing, and reflex exercises). Participants learn to collaborate, to listen, to respect, and to trust one another. Expressive Therapy further contributes to:

  • the development of imagination
  • the cultivation of thought
  • the expression of emotions
  • discipline, combined with freedom of expression within socially acceptable contexts
  • the release of energy
Sports Therapy (Yoga, Stretching, Pilates, Strengthening)

Physical activity has a positive impact on both body and mind. Sports Therapy promotes a health-oriented lifestyle, enhancing mood and self-esteem.

Its goal is to restore and encourage the joy of exercise as a means of coping with stress.

 

In particular, yoga is considered one of the most effective techniques for learning to manage stress, improving physical fitness, and achieving physical and mental wellbeing. The benefits of deep diaphragmatic breathing are numerous and significant. Deep, calm, diaphragmatic breathing regulates the parasympathetic nervous system, allowing the heart and mind to reach a state of calm.

Our facilities include, in addition to a specially equipped exercise room, outdoor spaces in a natural, protected environment that are ideal for green exercise.

What questions will I be asked when I call for admission?

During our initial communication with you, we collect the necessary information (Admission Interest Form) in order to confirm the availability of an appropriate room, to select the preferred hospitalisation option, and to determine the corresponding financial package.

Everything you need to know before calling is included in the Admission Interest Form (demographic details, medical history, current medication, level of communication, mobility status, etc.).

With the consent of the patient or the legal guardian, the admission is scheduled, during which the following documents and items must be provided:

  1. Health booklet validated for the current year (if available)
  2. Patient’s identity card
  3. Tax Identification Number (AFM)
  4. Social Security Number (AMKA)
  5. Any recent laboratory and imaging tests
  6. Current medication
  7. Identity card of a relative if the admission is not carried out by the patient themselves, along with proof of legal guardianship
  8. Advance payment of hospital fees until the end of the current month
  9. Required clothing (7–12 sets of clothes: socks, undershirts, underwear, nightgown/pyjamas or blouse and trousers, 1 jacket if the patient is ambulatory or 2 cardigans; all items labelled with the patient’s full name. Please ensure clothing is as elastic and comfortable as possible!)
  10. Footwear (at least 1–2 pairs of shoes and 1 pair of slippers)
  11. Air mattress if recommended
  12. Recent negative PCR test / vaccination certificate

Please note that the Clinic accepts no responsibility for the loss of valuables belonging to patients, their companions, or visitors, including money, jewellery, hearing aids, dentures, eyeglasses or sunglasses, mobile phones, laptops, tablets, etc.

Important: All sharp objects are strictly prohibited due to the risk of injury. In any case, before handing over any item to patients, please consult the reception desk.

Yes. If you are insured with EOPYY, hold valid insurance eligibility (verified through your AMKA number), and receive a diagnosis from the Clinic’s medical staff confirming that hospitalisation is required, you may be admitted under EOPYY coverage.

You simply need to inform the reception desk or the attending physician about the discharge in advance, so that the necessary documents can be prepared on time. On the scheduled date, the discharge process will be completed, and you will receive your personal belongings and the required documentation.

During the first 15 days of hospitalisation: At the time of admission, or the following day, an introductory meeting is held between the attending physician and the designated health custodian of the patient. During this initial 15-day period (or for as long as deemed necessary by the attending physician), visiting may not be recommended, both to allow for adaptation to the environment and for adjustment of the patient’s treatment.

 

For this reason, the following are scheduled upon admission for your information:

  1. a) a telephone appointment within the first 3–5 days of hospitalisation, in order to be updated on the patient’s adaptation progress, and
  2. b) an in-person appointment no later than 15 days after admission, to be informed about the progress of evaluation and treatment adjustment.

 

For the subsequent period of hospitalisation: Updates regarding the patient’s condition are provided by the attending physician during visiting hours and by prior appointment arranged through reception. For relatives who live far away or are unable to attend in person, telephone updates may be provided by the physicians following a scheduled appointment. In all cases, updates are given exclusively to the individual designated upon admission as the health custodian, and with reasonable time intervals between updates.

 

Emergency cases: In the event of any urgent diagnosis (medical, transfer requirement, acute psychiatric episode, etc.) you will be immediately informed by the attending physician, the responsible specialist internist, specialist cardiologist, or the on-call doctor.

The Clinic has six fully equipped and separate wards. Depending on the diagnosis and the patient’s individual needs, the attending physician selects the most suitable environment to support the therapeutic process. At the Psychiatric Clinic of Drama agia irini, we understand the increased needs and specific requirements involved in the care of elderly patients, and we have established dedicated geriatric wards to ensure comprehensive management and treatment of chronic diseases and geriatric syndromes.

The differences between Psychiatric Clinics and Elderly Care Units lie in the medical services provided. By law, psychiatric clinics are required to have 24-hour medical supervision, continuous psychiatric assessment of hospitalised patients, a specific ratio of specialised nursing staff per patient, and appropriate medical technology equipment. Such requirements do not apply to elderly care units.

 

Therefore, a psychiatric clinic offers far more specialised medical care for individuals with any form of dementia. In addition, in a psychiatric clinic, the collaboration between psychiatrists, doctors of other specialties, and trained nursing staff ensures the best and most timely therapeutic management of each psychiatric disorder, as well as the prompt diagnosis and treatment of medical conditions.

The days of the current month are prepaid at the beginning of the month. In the event of an earlier discharge, a settlement is made and the amount corresponding to the unused days is refunded.

 

The Clinic’s Accounting Department and Admissions Office operate Monday – Saturday, 08:00 – 15:00.

Yes. The Clinic provides ambulance transport services, available exclusively for patients to and from the Clinic, in accordance with applicable legislation.

Within the Clinic, and by arrangement, laundry services, hairdressing, and nail care are available.
