Care and Management of Cases

Chronic – Acute – Psychogeriatric Cases at Agia Irini Psychiatric Clinic of Drama

Family Psychoeducation

Management of Chronic Cases
Among the patients admitted to our Clinic, there is a group who face significant challenges in reintegrating into a non-protected environment.

The absence of a supportive family environment — one that can adequately meet the patient’s daily needs and appropriately address the remaining psychopathological symptoms despite ongoing medication — is often the most important and frequent challenge for this group of patients.

The severity of certain psychiatric conditions — such as schizophrenia — together with frequent relapses and the resulting dysfunction or disability, are among the key reasons that make continuous residence in a high-care, closely monitored environment essential for some patients.

In caring for these patients, our primary goal is to prevent frequent relapses or exacerbations of the psychiatric illness, which often represent the main reason for admission. At the same time, participation in psychotherapeutic groups aims to help patients develop or maintain essential skills and sustain an adequate level of functioning.

Finally, it is important to highlight that psychoeducation for the family is of great significance. It is designed to help relatives better understand the mental health condition and encourages regular communication to preserve family bonds, while respecting the particular challenges that often exist in the care of patients with chronic psychiatric disorders.
Providing care for patients in acute psychiatric crisis is a highly complex process. It requires attention not only to the clinical diagnosis but also to the individual personality and needs of each patient.
Our first priority is to identify and prevent any self-harm or aggressive behaviour, while always safeguarding the safety and dignity of our patients.

A thorough clinical assessment by our psychiatrists plays a crucial role in reaching an accurate diagnosis and in shaping a clear treatment plan.
Assigning a dedicated point of contact for each patient helps them settle into the Clinic’s environment and provides a sense of trust and security during the first days of admission.

Psychological assessment — often supported by psychometric testing — guides each patient into the most suitable therapeutic programme. This approach focuses on restoring insight where it may be impaired, addressing and reshaping unhelpful patterns of thinking, supporting social interaction and meaningful activities during treatment, and preparing patients for a successful return to the community.

Every case is unique. There are no rigid formulas. Our psychiatrists work in a highly individualised way, dedicating time, consistent care and genuine commitment to create the best possible conditions for recovery and long-term progress.
It is a well-recognised fact that the population of older adults in developed societies is steadily increasing. Unfortunately, longer life expectancy is often accompanied by chronic illnesses and disabilities.

An elderly patient may be living with physical conditions such as cardiovascular, neurological or mobility-related disorders. Frequently, these coexist with psychiatric illnesses, making the care of older adults particularly complex.
In response to these needs, psychogeriatrics has increasingly become a specialised field within psychiatry, focusing on the mental health challenges of the ageing population.

The presentation of mental health disorders in later life — as well as their treatment — often differs significantly from that in younger adults, requiring a tailored approach and specialised expertise.

Comprehensive Care for Psychogeriatric Patients

The care of psychogeriatric patients requires a well-coordinated, continuous collaboration among a multidisciplinary team — including physicians of various specialties, nursing staff, administrative and support personnel — in order to meet the complex healthcare needs of these patients.

At Agia Irini Psychiatric Clinic of Drama, we provide hospital-based care for individuals living with chronic psychiatric conditions such as schizophrenia, bipolar affective disorder, depression, delusional disorder, and others.

The group of memory disorders — the most common and widely recognised of which is Alzheimer’s disease — often presents with accompanying psychiatric symptoms. As a result, the management of these patients can be particularly complex, especially when compounded by the presence of additional physical health conditions.
Our Therapeutic Approach

At our Clinic, we are able to deliver a truly multidisciplinary therapeutic approach, tailored to the individual needs of each patient.
