Dementia

Dementia
The term dementia refers to a pathological condition characterised by progressive memory loss, disturbances of orientation, concentration, and attention, as well as changes in personality, mood, and behaviour.

Anxiety Disorders

According to the American DSM classification system, the following anxiety disorders are recognised: Panic Disorder, Agoraphobia, Generalised Anxiety Disorder (GAD), Social Phobia, and Specific Phobias.

Schizophrenia

The symptoms of this disorder adversely affect the organisation of thought, emotional expression, and behaviour, leading to a loss of communication skills and, consequently, a significant decline in overall functioning.

Depressive Disorder

Depression has been recognised since antiquity, as described in many historical texts (for example, the account of King Saul in the Old Testament, the suicide of Ajax in Homer’s Iliad around 400 BC, and Hippocrates’ use of the term melancholia).

Bipolar Disorder (Manic Depression)

This is a chronic and severe mental health disorder characterised by recurrent episodes of both mania and depression. In approximately 10% of patients, the episodes are exclusively manic; however, the condition is still classified as bipolar disorder.

Substance- and Alcohol-Related Disorders

A range of substances can lead to misuse and dependence, including alcohol, heroin, cocaine, benzodiazepines, amphetamines, and others.
